Aaah That's Good

Exhibition: Artist:

Stephen Tromans | Oil on Board | 10 x 12 inches

Stephen is a barrister, who as well as practicing in the fields of energy and environmental law, is an established artist working in oils and mixed media.  He is a versatile artist, whose exhibited and sold works include landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes.

He participated in the “Six Degrees of Separation” exhibition at The Gallery earlier in 2022, and sold a number of his series on 1980s Hong Kong. In recent years he has developed figurative work, and in particular a focus on characters in pubs of the past.

This exhibition includes more from this series, “Old Boozers”, which also proved popular in the Six Degrees show and other exhibitions including the Cambridge Drawing Society Annual Exhibition in 2022..

Stephen grew up in the Black Country in the 1970s and 80s and the series is based on his memories of pubs back then, when flat caps, mild & bitter and cigarettes were common features.

His images owe something in terms of inspiration to the work of Norman Cornish (1919-2014), but also to the drawings and lithographs of Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) and the seaside postcards of Donald McGill (1875-1962).

Deliberately playful, nostalgic but unsentimental, each work is a vignette which invokes a character, interpersonal relationships or a situation through emotional expression and narration.

We do offer the Own Art Scheme to purchase artwork. At 0% APR, this is payable in equal instalments over 10 months. Please contact the Gallery for more information.
