Cromer
Alistair Little | Oil on Melamine | 22 x 16 inches
“When Georgie asked me to contribute to the ‘Best of British’ show I decide to make something quintessentially British, more specifically something quintessentially Norfolk Stormfront.
However, me being me I had to put a cinematic spin on things. This painting shows some of the lovely sea front architecture of Cromer, I have taken some liberties with the buildings but I’ll chalk that up to artistic license.
I’m a huge Film Noir fan and there were some great Noir thrillers made in Britain in the 50’s and 60’s the one that immediately came to mind is a wonderful film called Jigsaw 1962 (starring Ronald Lewis and Jack Warner). If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it!
With that in mind here we are in a noirish, moody Cromer. The sun has just come out after a heavy downpour. I’ve always loved those moments where buildings are brightly lit by sunlight against a backdrop of leaden skies. In fact it‘s an atmosphere I’ve explored in all 3 paintings I’ve submitted for this show.
In the foreground you’ll see a solitary male figure in a brimmed hat and raincoat. In my mind a hardworking detective in the jaws of a convoluted case.
Whether he gets his man, or woman I’ll leave up to you.” Alistair
