Diva Rising

Gertie Young RWS | Acrylic Gouache, Collage, Coloured Pencil, Sweet Papers on Card | 9 x 12 inches

“We are being treated to an evening at Covent Garden Opera House. Rich purples, dark blues and violet sweet papers are punctuated by brilliant chandeliers and high above, the Royal crest.  A velvety darkness surrounds an amber coloured central space.  The atmosphere is hushed, the rectangular stage has been heavily collaged.  The curtains have opened and in the centre a soprano is singing an aria.  Her voice fills the opera house with a radiant sweetness.  As she sings her voice climbs ever higher and the notes open like flowers that rise like flowers and then shower down on the rapt audience.

I have painted since I was a child, spending my time making sense of the world through my paintings.  I attended Hornsey Art College and after leaving followed a number of careers – deputy registrar and business analyst among them as well as being a mother.  During this time I continued to paint and following my retirement I started to paint full-time, entering competitions and finally becoming a member and treasurer of the Royal Watercolour Society.    I live in South London and my inspiration comes from the things I see around me or when I’m walking or travelling.” Gertie Young
