“I have been thinking a lot about life and death recently. Flowers are amazing at showing complete life cycles on one plant at one time often in one day. Starting off very simply, reaching a peak of beauty then becoming more interesting colourful and complex with age, before fading and suddenly dying, just like the human story. My Mum died while I was painting ‘Final Flourish’ and I eventually finished it partly as a tribute to her and partly because I wanted to highlight the beauty and complexity of old age as well as the obvious beauty of youth. I have since read that the Tulip represents ‘True Love’ which seems appropriate too.”
