“In my work I try to achieve a kind of resonant stillness. I want to capture the vibrancy of objects we notice in passing but may be too busy to stop and contemplate. Analysis and observation are central to my practice, but ultimately the paintings are reconstructions of reality rather than representations. To arrive at what to me is the essence of the subject I will change colours and tones, remove inessential details.

Light, and the expressiveness of light, is a key element of my work. The character of a subject will change with different light, and I take time to get the right light on a subject, to literally illuminate it how I have visualised it. Space within the work is also important. I move objects around within the space within the painting until I feel that the relationships between them have the correct tensions or harmonies.” Robert
