Kissing Whippets

Dominica Yannaghas | Oil on Board | 20 x 24 inches

“Ever since I was able to hold a pencil, I’ve wanted to capture on paper the things that inspire me and bring me comfort and from an early age this was animals. I grew up on a farm with horses and Whippets and it was these that took pride of place in my early drawing books. I went on to study Art and the History of Art at A’ level, picking up my drawing pencils again in my late thirties.

For the last ten years I have worked as a Dog Portrait Artist, honing my observational skills to produce commissions of a wide variety of breeds in both pastel and oil. In July 2021 I graduated from the Norfolk Painting School with a Diploma in Oil having found new ways to express myself in paint.

These days I am fascinated by colour, line and pattern and finding the best ways to arrange these elements as a harmonic whole. Inspired by the painters of the Bloomsbury Group and Camden Town, I’m told my paintings have a Bloomsbury-like quality about them. I like to paint pictures that glorify pattern and colour and celebrate the love of home – a vase of flowers on the kitchen table, a Whippet snoozing, vegetables in the cottage garden, or treasured ornaments sat on a sunlit window – or other subjects such as these that make the shortlist called ‘my favourite things.” Dominica
