“I gave my painting this title because I was fed up hearing women, unaware of their privilege, applying the phrase, ‘strong and independent’, to themselves, as though they’d only just heard of it. In my view the strongest and most independent women are probably the most frail. Our towns and villages are full of them and they’re the widows, like my aunt, who have no choice.

So my aunt’s backbone is delicately balanced, old-fashioned, genteel, chipped, cracked but still holding up. If it could wear a hat and gloves, it would.” Jenny
