“It’s fair to say my upbringing was dominated by a difficult father, who hated disturbance of any kind, including guests who’d been invited. I was thinking about him as I was playing about with lead toys and miniature teapots, once I’d placed them in a procession, I could hear him say, ‘Oh God! They’ve arrived.’
