Quartered Arc (1970)
Gordon House (1932-2004) | Etching | Edition of 40 | Unframed | 6.5 x 6.5 inches
This work is one of House’s very earliest forays into etching. In this series the artist embraced the ‘line and surface possibility of the etching technique’ while also experimenting with ‘the added contrast of cutting the plate to include an unprinted area within an inked image’.
House described how ‘the etching process of the artists’ atelier with its time consuming traditional single black wipe allows for a quality unique and unlike other complex printed forms’. The designs in this series were inspired by media forms, in particular the ‘visual magic of printed metallic electronic circuitry as presented in magazine advertisements for new gadgets’.
