Shaft of Light

Alistair Martin | Oil on Board | 36 x 28 inches

“A shaft of light crosses a Venetian canal fleetingly catching a gondolier before disappearing back into the shadows.” Alistair

Alistair Martin grew up and was educated in Berkshire. During the year after leaving school he worked as an art master at a preparatory school in Sussex. He went on to study medicine in London, and then moved to Norfolk where he trained as a General Practitioner to became a Partner in a rural south Norfolk Practice where he worked for over 30 years.

He maintained his love and interest in painting [then almost exclusively watercolour] throughout this time, but it was not until he retired in 2014 that he was able to direct his energies towards oil painting.  In 2016, he enrolled on the Diploma course at the Norfolk Painting School under the tutelage of Martin Kinnear, and, upon completion, volunteered as an assistant tutor at the school.

Alistair’s painting style has been largely influenced by the East Anglian artists of the 20th century, such as Seago, Arnesby Brown and Munnings. In this exhibition he presents a varied collection of subjects from this country and abroad.  All have a common thread of capturing the light and atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the image, creating a sense of place, a feeling of being there.

As well as various local shows, Alistair has exhibited at the “Art in the Park”, Croxton as an invited artist, and also at the New British Art Gallery, North Creake in 2017 as part of the Diploma Graduate Show.
