Stability of Thy Times 4

Stephen Bragg Dip Arch (Oxford) RIBA FRSA | Watercolour | 18.5 x 18.5 inches

“Rockefeller Centre is a large complex consisting of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres (89,000 m2) between 48th Street and 51st Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Developed by John D Rockefeller, the then richest man in the world, as a way of providing employment and hope. Given it’s functional requirements the abundance of fantastic Art Deco Artworks is even more surprising. This painting is one of a series based on the Glass frieze above the main entrance of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. This is the work of Lee Lawrie who contributed 14 works throughout the complex, including the sculpture of Atlas. This sculpture is transparent, reflective and refractive which coupled with the changing lighting, during the day or at night provides a myriad of effects and atmospheres. The full quote is ‘Wisdom and Knowledge shall be the Stability of thy Times’.”
