Ellie Bird | Acrylic on Canvas | 36 x 36 inches

Ellie Bird lives in North London where she was a primary school teacher for twenty years, specialising in art and music. With the onset of the pandemic, Ellie left teaching to pursue her painting passion full time. She had a studio built in her garden and has never looked back.

Self-taught and working with acrylics, Ellie’s work focuses predominantly on her love of water and, more recently, has expanded into the world of fluid art techniques.

“My work focuses on the intersection of the real and the abstract. This is visually captured through depictions of light reflections and refractions through water, distorting both the human form and the water medium. The dreamlike effect of shape, colour and light distortions provokes a relaxation of pre-conceived self-image, and a form of escapism from the constraints of physical reality.”

My love of water led me to exploring fluid art techniques where the flow of the paint mimics the flow of water. The result is often unpredictable, but the way the paints flow and interact with each other creates a magical quality which lends itself perfectly to depicting an underwater world. I often add a layer of resin as a topcoat to add another dimension to the work.” Ellie
