Cape landscape – Cat Pair

Exhibition: Artist:

Martin Haines | 17 inches tall | Life Size

Martin Haines is a studio potter living and working in the small East coast village of St Francis Bay. South Africa.

For the past three decades he has worked mainly in the colours of blue and white or green and white using copper oxide and more recently in black & white inspired by traditional early European Delftware porcelain and the surface designs of oriental ceramics. His work is mainly decorative incorporating a 17th Century aesthetic with a South African heritage sensibility in his contemporary designs drawing on the landscape and indigenous environment in which he finds himself.

When making his flatware, mainly plates, it is important to the artist that the work unlike fine porcelain has more of a rustic finish giving it a more tactile ‘peasant pottery’ feel as opposed to his commemorative vases, tile murals and sculptural cats which are more fine in approach.
His work can be found in numerous art collections both local and International, notably the prestigious White Rabbit Collection in Sydney, Australia.
