Konstantin Sterkhov | Watercolour | 21 x 13 inches

“Cats as a subject in my paintings serve as a kind of psychological refuge. I have always loved them; growing up there was always a cat in my family home, for as long as I can remember. Most recently, we had a British Shorthair who lived with us for fifteen years, and later a stray tabby who stayed with us for a shorter time. They had very different personalities.       The British Shorthair, Maria, was perfect in every way, calm, dignified, and remarkably patient while growing up alongside children. The tabby, by contrast, was simpler in appearance but possessed a strong, independent spirit, a true fighter for freedom.

In recent years, constant travel has kept me from having a cat of my own, and I feel it may take some time before I can settle and enjoy that companionship again. Nevertheless, I am fortunate to return to cats through my paintings. Depicting them allows me to slow down, to find calm, and to reconnect with a sense of inner balance.

Watercolour is an ideal medium for capturing the nature of cats, their softness, their fluidity, and their quiet complexity.” – Konstantin
