Perry Pigeon

Sara Budzik | Ceramic | 11 x 6 x 13 inches

Sara trained in Fine Art, first at Bretton Hall College, later earning a master’s degree from The Surrey Institute of Art in 2001. She has spent her career making and teaching art. Living in Nottinghamshire with her family, two cats, a toy poodle named Frida and a blind rescue hedgehog. Sara works from a small studio space at home where she creates ceramic sculpture inspired by the natural world. Much of her work celebrates the often-overlooked animals that we share our planet with. Sara was keen to show her pigeons for this exhibition as they succinctly represent our complex relationship with other species.

Personally, finding pigeons simultaneously ridiculous, charming, beautiful and occasionally annoying, she wants to celebrate and acknowledge their right to exist. Sara’s pieces are constructed from thin pieces of clay layered and unblended, sometimes rough and textured, yet fragile and delicate, always carefully considered and always imperfect. Colours are developed by washing layers of oxides and underglazes, flowing freely over the surfaces and highlighting the textures, with just a hint of glaze to bring the eyes to life.
