Based in Mumbai, Sushma Yadav is a wildlife artist and designer whose work captures the precarious beauty of the natural world. A graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, her perspective was shaped by a childhood spent in the wilderness as the daughter of a Forest Officer. This lifelong proximity to nature fuels her exploration of the animal spirit and the shifting environments they inhabit.

Her practice is a study of duality, bridging the gap between clinical precision and evocative abstraction. On one end of her creative spectrum lies a commitment to hyper-realism, where she renders the anatomical precision of her subjects with obsessive detail capturing the tactile quality of each hair and the specific softness of fur. On the other, she utilizes mixed media, incorporating cracked surfaces and weathered textures to mirror the fragility and disturbance of the modern habitat. By layering intricate patterns and physical textures, she creates a visual metaphor for a world where nature is constantly being reshaped and fragmented.

Despite these differing aesthetic approaches, the soul of her work remains constant: “the eyes”. She believes that an animal’s gaze carries a profound narrative that requires no human voice. Whether through the clean lines of a realistic study or the gritty, weathered layers of a mixed-media piece, her goal is to capture that silent, powerful expression.

Recognized internationally, she was a finalist for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) Wildlife Artist of the Year 2025, where her work was Highly Commended by the judges. Through her evolving style, she invites the viewer to witness the wild in all its detailed splendour and its vulnerable, changing reality.
