John is a painter who works “en plein air”, and in the studio. He’s a council member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Wapping Group of Artists, and an elected member of Chelsea Art Society. He has works in the collections of Queen Elizabeth II, Oxford University, and Hampton Court Palace.
In the 1970s, while studying to be an architect, John sold his paintings of local scenes from the railings of the Bayswater Road in London. In the 1980s he worked at a much larger scale as a scenic artist, painting huge canvases and backdrops for live theatre. He has also been a theatre design consultant, a registered architect and an architectural photographer. He’s been painting full-time since 1990.
He has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Wapping Group of Artists, Chelsea Art Society, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists, British Plein Air Painters, and at the Royal Academy Summer Show. He was commissioned to produce the painting for the 2009 “Oxford Almanack” – an annual publication of the Oxford University Press. Previously commissioned artists included JMW Turner, John Piper, David Gentleman and Sir Hugh Casson.
John has lived in London most of his life and now lives in Bath.
