Ashley is a bird mechanic whose practice has, to date, centred on relief paintings that awaken through the turn of a crank. In his recent work, he turns toward the evocation of narrative itself, fragments of story that feel as though they have been lifted from a stop-motion film and briefly held in stillness.

These handmade automata are meticulously carved from wood and finished in oil paint, merging sculptural refinement with a painter’s sensibility to conjure delicate impressions of movement, memory, and suspended time.
