Michelle Weiner | Tretra Pak Print | Edition of 6 | 11.5 x 11.5 inches
Michelle Weiner captures nostalgic scenes of family, childhood and her cultural heritage through print. She uses predominantly solvent-free printing techniques and experimental methods when working with materials.
The cat prints presented for the ‘Put the Cat Among the Pigeons’ exhibition are created with an intaglio collagraph technique of drawing into the shiny interior of a Tetra-Pak carton with etching tools and scoring through the surface. The ink is then applied to these incised areas and cleaned back carefully for a print to be taken from the adapted carton. Michelle says, ‘What I love about working with Tetra Pak is that you must think carefully about the placement of the image, as you never fully erase the memory of the carton and its creases. I like to use this as a challenge to incorporate the lines in my designs/composition.’
Through muted tones and texture, Michelle has honed a soft, tactile and distinctive printmaking style. Her work aims to be quiet and considered, elevating the tranquil and fleeting moments of everyday life and commonplace rituals.
Michelle lives in London where she teaches regular printmaking classes. She has collaborated on creative projects and held artist residencies with institutions including, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Dulwich Picture Gallery, and The Albany Theatre. She has exhibited work at the Royal Academy of Arts and is a proud Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.
