Chris Lodge | Oil on Board | 12 x 20.5 inches
Chris Lodge is a wildlife artist based in Suffolk, UK, whose work is defined by a deep-rooted fascination with birds in their natural environments. Specializing in oil on board, his realism goes beyond strict anatomical accuracy as he seeks to capture the unique individual ‘personality’ of his subjects alongside the atmospheric essence of their habitats.
His current body of work is heavily influenced by the wild beauty of the British coastline, particularly the estuaries and marshes of East Anglia, translating field observations into finished studio pieces.
“My work is born from a lifelong love of wild birds and the quiet, untamed places they inhabit. I am interested in capturing the unique character of individual birds at a given moment in time and light, along with the qualities of posture and shape that define the species themselves.
My process begins far from the easel; I spend many hours in the field, observing my subjects in their natural habitats throughout the seasons. Currently, I find myself drawn to the vast, shifting landscapes of the East Anglian coastline, its estuaries and marshes provide a dramatic stage for the terns, waders, and waterfowl that dominate my recent compositions.
Ultimately, my goal is to bridge the gap between observation and emotional connection. I want the viewer to feel as though they are standing beside me on the shoreline, witnessing a singular moment in the life of a bird that will never be repeated in exactly the same way and to feel the inherent beauty of that fleeting moment.” – Chris
