Solent Sunset
Stewart Beckett AROI | Oil | 12 x 12 inches
Born in 1973 and based in Hampshire, artist Stewart Beckett studied art at Portsmouth Art College and Southampton Institute. Rooted in drawing and painting from life, his work traces the shifting dialogue between perception, presence, and mark-making. He enters each piece slowly, attentive to the quiet rhythm of thought, catching moments of restlessness and letting them dissolve into stillness. Each mark is deliberate, an act of care, a record of truly seeing.
For him, observation is not a passive gaze but a lived experience: feeling the weight of light, sensing the movement of air, listening to the silence between gestures. In this space, energy is translated onto the surface, marks breathing with the time it took to make them.
Stewart allows each work to unfold at its own pace, patient to its evolution. Through slowness and focus, Beckett seeks to reveal the quiet intensity of presence, inviting others into a slower way of looking, one that notices the subtle, the overlooked, the spaces between. His paintings are both process and meditation, carrying the residue of movement, thought, and time, like footprints across a floor.
