Cat With Ball
Martin Leman RBA RWS | Oil on Canvas | 12 x 12 inches
A painter, designer, and teacher, he was born and lived in London, gaining international recognition for his humorous and highly stylised paintings of cats, earning him the nickname “the original cat man.” After studying at Worthing Art School, he completed his National Service in the Army, serving in Egypt. He then spent two years at the Central School of Arts and Crafts training as a graphic designer, leaving before completing the course in order to pursue practical design work.
Following a variety of roles, he moved into teaching, working primarily part-time at Hornsey College of Art for nearly two decades. This balance allowed him to continue developing his freelance practice. In the late 1960s, he began creating the cat paintings for which he became best known, and a series of successful exhibitions and published books eventually enabled him to work independently.
